Abstract

194,284. Akt.-Ges. Brown, Boveri, et Cie. March 4, 1922, [Convention date]. Vacuum gauges, indicating-means for; pressure deduced from temperature.-A tube h connected to the receiver in which the high vacuum is to be measured, surrounds a continuously heated mercury thermometer k, the conduction of heat from which varies according to the degree of high vacuum in the tube h, the reading of the thermometer thus indicating the degree of vacuum. The thermometer bulb is elongated and is heated by an electric current passed through the mercury by means of contact wires a, b fused into the glass, or passing through resistance wires within or around the bulb. The space above the mercury may be filled with highly compressed nitrogen &c. to raise the boiling- point of the mercury and prevent division of the column, an enlargement m being provided to keep the pressure constant. The bulb k is surrounded with a reflecting coat to reduce radiation. Contact wires may be fused into the capillary tube l at the points c, d to provide an electric control for a relay for stopping and starting the vacuum pump to maintain a certain degree of vacuum.
