Abstract
193,215. McErlane, D. Dec. 29, 1921. Actuating pumps by foot power.-In pumps for inflating pneumatic tyres, in which a piston is reciprocated in a fixed cylinder by linkages connected to a pedal, and a double treadle-lever such as 1, spring-pivoted to the frame at 3, is connected by a pair of parallel links such as 20 to a crosshead at the end of the piston rod, the piston rod is polygonal in section and slides through a similarly-shaped guide 15 which is formed with lugs embracing the frame members and is bolted thereto; while the end of the piston rod engages a polygonal hole in the crosshead, and a reduced screwed portion projects through the crosshead and is secured by a nut 18. The open end of the cylinder is carried by a bracket 10 having channelled lugs 11 embracing the frame members and secured by bolts. A catch 22 also may be fitted, which engages the cross-bar 25 to hold the pump in a folded inoperative position, and may be released by pressure of the toe against its upper end. The tread 2 may be extended towards the pivot 3 to form a protective casing for a gauge glass near the end of the cylinder when the tread is lowered, the extension being provided with an inspection opening for reading the gauge.
