Erasers. - An erasing-device for use on typewriters, and of the kind in which erasing is effected by pressing adhesive material into contact with the paper, is mounted to slide towards the paper, and the adhesive material preferably consists of surgical tape mounted on spools; to confine the erasing action to a small area, the face of the tape may be provided with netting. In the construction shown a casing 37 containing spools 70, 71 for the adhesive tape 17 is secured to a channelled base 36 mounted to slide in a channelled plate 42 which can slide in a channelled support 28. The support is pivoted at 29 to a bracket 19 secured by a screw 27 to the frame 11 of the typewriter, the device being secured in register with the printing-point. The slides 36, 42 are normally held in retracted position, shown in Fig. 5, by means of a spring, the slide 36 resting on ears 34 on the bracket. The retracting- spring may consist of a spring 54, connected to a pin 56 on the support 28 and a collar 58 on a tube 57, and a weaker spring 55. connected to the end 59 of the tube and a pin 60 on the slide 36. The bottom plate 61 of the casing projects forwardly and supports a block 79 carrying a yielding plunger 15 for depressing the ink ribbon 13, and a rigid plunger 86 for pressing the tape into contact with the paper. The plunger 15 is pressed forwards by means of a spring 91. The plunger 85 is curved to fit the platen 14 and may have a pitted face or a roughened cruciform face. The tape passes from the bottom to the top spool and is stretched over the face of the plunger 85 by means of a lug 64 formed on a flange 62 on the plate 61. The spools are loose on a post 69, and the cover 76 of the casing is coupled to the top spool by means of a pin 77, and is formed with teeth engaging a detent 78. The cover is turned periodically to wind the tape, and when the top spool is full, the cover is detached, the spools are withdrawn, the empty spool is replaced above the full spool. In operation, forward and downward pressure being applied, the device moves forward until the plunger 15 touches the paper 18, whereupon the slot 49 permits downward rocking of the device, and the plunger pushes aside the ink ribbon 13. During the short forward movement accompanying the downward movement, the. plunger 85 forces the tape into contact with the paper. and when the device is retracted by the springs 54, 55, the erroneously-printed letter adheres to the tape and is removed from the paper.
