Abstract

192,412. Lafitte, T. Jan. 30, 1922, [Convention date]. Projectiles; fuzes; cartridges. -A grenade 1 intended to be thrown by hand at short ranges and to be discharged from a gun at longer ranges is formed with a tail having cross ribs 13 resembling the tail described in Specification 130,403, and is provided with a. detachable tail 2, which is put on only when the grenade is to be thrown by hand, to ensure a nose-on impact to effect the proper action of the fuze. The flexible tail 2, which is similar to that described in Specification 123,182, is a truncated cone of fabric held expanded at the free end by a ring 16. The other end is detachably secured by a split ring 15 to a ring 14 around the rear end of vanes 13, which are on the perforated cartridge socket 12. The body of the grenade is of cast iron, and is shaped as shown with a turned cylindrical part 3<a> to fit the bore of the gun. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the following subject-matter. The cartridges are coloured according to the ranges for which they are intended. The grenade is exploded on impact by means of a detonator 5 and a striker 7, which is driven in by the impact. The striker 7 is normally locked by an oblique pin 10, which is removed by hand before the grenade is thrown, or by the set-back of a weight 11 when the grenade is discharged from a gun. The striker 7 is moreover screwed into a sleeve 6 in such a way that its rotational inertia helps to screw it inwards when the grenade is thrown; and a vane-wheel 8 rotates the striker during flight, causing complete disengagement cf its threads from the sleeve 6, leaving only a light spring 9 to hold the striker forwards until impact. The vane-wheel is cone-shaped as shown, and is perforated at 17 to reduce air resistance. The screw threads between the sleeve 6 and the detonator socket 4 are pitched in the opposite direction to the screw-threads between the striker and the sleeve to ensure safety in assembling. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
