Pumping-machines; regulating.-A centrifugal pump or compressor 4 has a valve 9 in the delivery main 7, which, when the withdrawal from the main falls below a predetermined amount, is adapted either to by-pass a quantity of the fluid through a pipe 12 back to the tank 5 connected to the suction pipe 6, or to allow the fluid to escape to waste, and so to check detrimental heating or pulsations. The pump 4 may be driven by a turbine 1 having an inlet valve 8 controlled by the pressure in the main 7. The valve 9 consists of a piston 10, Fig. 2, and a valve member 11, the underside of the member 11 being exposed to the pressure in the main 7, while the upper side of the piston 10 is subjected by means of a pipe 13 to the pressure of the steam supplied to the turbine 1, or tapped from an intermediate stage in the case of a multistage turbine.
