This invention relates to feed water heaters and more particularly to heaters of, what is commercially known as, the open type wherein a heating or condensing chamber is provided into which the cold water to be heated is pumped by a cold Water pump and contacts with incoming steam, preferably the exhaust steam from an engine, for heating and from which chamber the heated water and condensed steam are drawn ofi" by a hot water pump.
An object of this invention is to provide means for priming or re-starting'the hot water pump should it fail or stop for any reason during the operation of the heater.
More specifically, the invention comprehends the combination with tandem pumps of means operated by pressure diiference to connect the discharge of one of the pumps with the suction of the other pump, whereby upon failure or stoppage of the latter pump during operation of the device, the first pump will discharge into and fill the second pump enabling it to continue operation with mini- WVith these objects in view the invention consists in various features of'construction and combination'of parts, which will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawing showing, in vertical section a be specifically pointedout in the claims.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the feed Water heater, which may be of any approved type, embodiesa heating or condensing chamber 1 into which steam,pref-- erably the exhaust steam from the engine is delivered through the passageway 2. The
cold water to be heated is pumped into the chamber 1 by the cold water pump 3 through the 'passageway4 and the sprayer 5 so that the incoming cold water is sprayed in relatively fine streams for contact with the in coming steam for the purpose of heating the water and condensing the steam. The hot water and condensate are withdrawn from the chamber Lby the hot water pump structure 6 and discharged to any suitable point discharge valve 7 while the hot water pumped from the chamber 1 enters the pump 6 through the valve structure 9 and passageway 10. v p i A pipe 11 communicates'with the passage.- vay 8 and opens into the lower chamber 12 v of a suitable tank or reservoir 13. The chamber 12 is separated from the upper chamber 14 in the tank 13 by a valve 15 which is held seated both by pressureof water in the cham-. ber 14L, which enters the said chamber through the pipe 16 from the passageway 10 and suction of the hot pump 6, and by a spring 17 which serves to counterbalance the pressures between the chambers 14 and 12.
Should the pump 6 fail for any reason and I quently, from the discharge passage 8 of' the pump 3, under the discharge pressure of the pump 3, through the pipe 16 into the passageway 10 and suction of the pump 6 for priming'the pump 6 and enabling it to continue operation with a minimum lossof-time. It will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific construction pump, a hot water pump, a conduit establish- 111g communication between the discharge of the-cold water pump and the suction of the hot water pump, and a pressure operated V valve in said conduit operable to permit the cold Witt-61'- pump to discharge intothe suction of the hot water pump upon decreaseofnormal pressure 1 difference between the cold pump discharge and the hot pump suction.

In a feed water heater, a cold water pump, a hot water pump, a chamber having communication with the discharge of the cold water pump, a second chamber havingrcommunication with the suction of the hot water pump, a pressure controlled valve controlling communication between said chambers whereby upon reduction of pressure in the second chamber the valve will be unseated to permit fluid to flow through the chambers from the discharge of the cold water pump to the suction of the hot water pump.
3. In a feed water heater, a cold water pump, a hot water pump, a chamber having communication with the discharge of the cold water pump, a second chamber having communication with the suction of the hot water pump, a pressure controlled valve controlling communication between said chambers whereby upon reduction of pressure in the second chamber the valve will be unseated to permit fluid to flow through the chambers from the discharge of the cold Water pump to the suction of the hot Water pump, and a spring cooperating with said valve for balancing the pressure on the valve during normal operating conditions.
