Abstract
17,543. Harvey, E. W. Dec. 15. Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-The fuel and air supply ports of steel, glass, reheating, and annealing furnaces are constructed and arranged to secure mixing of the gas and air in the immediate neighbourhood of the flame port. The air or gas ports are so situated on each side of the gas or air port that the air or gas issues from the ports in a direction substantially at right-angles to the gas or air current and thus passes through at least two air or gas currents. The air or gas port is so constructed that the air or gas is compressed before it mixes with the gas or air, and the mixing- chamber is also constructed so that the gases passing through it are compressed. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, air or gas issues from the tapered port 1 and passes between gas or air passing vertically upwards through ports 2. The air and gas mixes in the chamber 3, which is also provided with inclined sides and top. According to a modification, the bottom of the port 1 is inclined, as well as the top and sides, while the mixing-chamber 3 is provided with parallel sides and inclined top and bottom. In a further modification, the top and bottom of the port 1 and the mixing-chamber 3 are parallel and horizontal, and the sides are inclined. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the bottoms of the port 1 and chamber 3 slope upwards towards the furnace, while the horizontal section resembles that shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 8 and 9 show a modification in which the top of the port 1 and chamber 3 are inclined downwardly in the same straight line, and the ports 2 have their sides inclined in the same direction, so that the air or gas streams converge on the central gas or air stream. The bottom of the port 1 and chamber 3 shown in Fig. 8 may be inclined in the same straight line. Figs. 11 and 12 show a modification in which the gas or air issuing through the port 1 passes through air or gas entering through the ports 2, 2<a>. Specifications 10,824/12, 17,956/13, and 28,049/13 are referred to.
