Abstract

17,442. Lindquist, H. E. Dec. 13. Gun cartridges.-Consists in making cartridge cases for ordnance with a tubular body a of extremely-dense vulcanized fibre the interior mass of which is entirely free from chemical acids and salts, the exterior or interior of the tube being machined to a smaller diameter, to receive a base cap b. The chemicals are removed by the usual washing process, but this is more extended and thorough. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the tube a is cylindrical inside and tapered outside to fit the gun chamber, the brass base b is screwed over the end of the tube a, and the front end of the tube is strengthened by a metal ring c shrunk around it. The tube a may be waterproofed by a coating of paraffin, especially over the parts attached to the metal base, to prevent deterioration of the metal in case some residuum of chemicals is left in the interior of the fibre.
