Linkage gears.-In a locomotive or other engine having two outside cylinders and a central cylinder working on cranks at 120 degrees apart, the distributing-valves of the outside cylinders are worked by Walschaert's or other gears, and the valve of the central cylinder is worked by mechanism actuated jointly by the two outside gears. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the spindles of the valves 8, 9 oscillate two levers 21, 22. The lever 22 is a two-to-one lever and is pivoted on the frame at 23. The lever 21 is centrally pivoted on one end of the lever 22, and its inner end is connected to the valve 10 of the central cylinder. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the valve-gears of the outside cylinders oscillate shafts 35, 36 mounted in fixed bearings, through arms 46<a>, 41<a>. The shafts 35, 36 have arms 46, 41 which actuate the valves of the outside cylinders, and arms 47, 42 at their ends connected to the top end and the middle respectively of a sway-beam 45, the lower end of which actuates the valve of the central engine. The arm 41 is twice the effective length of the arm 42.
