Linkage gears.-In the cross-head gear for locomotives shown, the link 8 is oscillated by an arm 7 connected to a crank 6 on a shaft 4 which 'is oscillated by an arm 3 and a link 2 connected to the cross-head. The point 17 from which the valve motion is taken may be connected directly to the valve-spindle head K, or, as shown, through links 18, 19 connected to the cross-head, which give lead and lap to the valve.
