Abstract

13,853. Kershaw, J. L. Sept. 29. Bending and curving.-Flat bars are bent in their own plane while being held by pressure at right-angles, this pressure also giving a preliminary distortion to the bar if flanged in order to neutralize that due to bending. The angle-bar C, Fig. 5, is clamped between a head H, adjusted by means of a screw P and actuated by a cam W and wedge R, and the bed. The head carries a block G adjusted by a wedge n, Fig. 4, and bending-members H<2> to act on two parts of the vertical flange, and the bed has a central bearing K under the flange and between the members H<2>. The main bending- head D<1>, adjusted by a screw F and actuated by an eccentric E', carries adjustable blocks D, Fig. 2, which co-operate with the back block G<1> to bend the bar. This block, which is adjustable by means of a wedge I, supports the rear of the block G<1> and an adjustable curved member g, which engages the edge of the bar. The edges of the bar projecting from the machine are supported by adjustable wedges U, Fig. 2. If one of these wedges is advanced sufficiently, the bar is bent into a spiral. If the bar has a vertical flange on the inside of the bend, the head H, Fig. 9, has a single central bending- member V<1>, the bed has two spaced bearings K<1> below the vertical flange, and block G<1> has a curved faced member I<2>. If the bar has two vertical flanges, the bending-members H<2> act on the outside, and the member V<1> on the inside flange, and the bar is supported by the three bearings K, K<1> and the member I<2>. The block G is also replaced by an inclined block X engaging a wedge, which may be adjusted in size by filling-pieces. The bar C is fed, between each bending operation, by a spring pawl Z<2> on a hand-lever Z reciprocated between adjustable stops Z', Z<4>. The cam W may be thrown out of action by means of a clutch, and the lower portion of the machine used independently.
