Abstract

13,849. Thomson, T. Sept. 29. Bore-hole apparatus. - An approximately horizontal mine passage for military or other purposes is driven by a machine which advances itself through the ground by the impact of a hammer reciprocated by fluid pressure within the machine. The machine comprises a casing a with a conoidal head a<1> and containing an inner cylinder b, in which reciprocates a doubleheaded piston c controlled in a usual manner by a slide valve l and striking the head a<1> through a copper or lignum-vitµ block o, which deadens the sound. The return stroke of the piston is cushioned. Actuating-fluid is supplied to the valve l through a flexible pipe j and passes to and from the cylinder b through grooves formed on the exterior of the cylinder. The machine is withdrawn, after completing the passage, by a cable attached to an eye p. The Provisional Specification states that an explosive mine may be driven into the ground by such a machine, or by means of a driving-casing with helical fins, the casing being rotated by a motor such as a Pelton wheel.
