Tabular c a l c u l a t o r s ; proportional calculators.- In a calculator for wages, employing square-ruled paper and a swivelling reading index-line L upon a transparent pointer N pivoted at one corner, the two sides of the square are graduated to represent hours and shillings respectively, and a second scale C D is provided for calculating percentages of wages in the case in which wages have to be divided between a gang of men. The line L is set on the scale C D to an amount which it is desired to divide up in percentages, and the percentage is read on the hours scale. As shown, the scale is set for 50 shillings, and to get 52 per cent, the vertical line 52 is taken, and its intersection with the reading- line L gives 26 shillings on the vertical shillings scale.
