Abstract
1426563 Slide rule BEECHAM GROUP Ltd 4 Feb 1974 8463/73 Heading G4B A calculator of disc, cylindrical or (as shown) flat straight form bears scales relating profits to buying and selling prices, firstly in connection with items which attract VAT at a given rate and secondly in connection with zero-rated items. When a buying price per unit (15 as shown) on scale S is aligned with the zero mark on scale P o , then selling prices on scale S (e.g. 18) are aligned with profit margins (e.g. 16À6%) on scale P 0 (for zero-rated items) and with profit margins (e.g. 8%) on scale P T (for items bearing VAT). Scale P T is valid for a rate of VAT=x, where - x on extrapolated P T is aligned with 0 on scale P o . If the items are bought so many to a ease, then an appropriate C-scale can be used in conjunction with index mark 5 to align the unit item cost on scale S with the zero of scale P o . The other side of the rule is similar but bears different C-scales. To accommodate changes in the rate of VAT, the P T scale may be adjustable or bear a number of marks corresponding to different values of x.
