Abstract
13,188. Hanel, P. T. Sept. 15. Fatty oils, extracting by pressure. Relates to horizontal or slightly inclined hydraulic presses for pressing out cocoa butter and the like, comprising a series of annular hollow elements or " pots " into which the cocoa is fed, arranged with their axes in a straight line and co-operating with press plungers which are of such a length that they will serve to expel the press cakes from the pots when the pressing is complete. Figs. 1 and 3 show respectively an elevation and plan partly in section, and Fig. 2 a transverse section of such a press, while Fig. 12 shows in longitudinal section one of the pots 12, adjacent plungers 9 which are hollow and adapted to be heated by steam, filter-plates 19, 23 between which the cocoa is pressed, and perforated and channeled plates 10, 10', 11 by means of which the butter is discharged into a gutter 35, Fig. 1. The pots 12, which are fed from a heated container 29 through gutters 33 and openings 34 fitted with valves 38, Fig. 8, are supported by lateral extensions 13 sliding upon rods 14, while the plungers 9 are guided on the tie-rods 1 by means of plate-like projections a. The operation of the press is as follows. The filter-plates 19, 23 are first placed in position in each pot. This is done by retracting the piston of the press and moving the left-hand pot clear of the second plunger by means of the first crossshaft 20, Fig. 3, worm gear 21, 22, and screw and nut 17, 18, and so on for the other pots. The pots are then closed by reversing this process, and are then filled. The auxiliary press 5, 6, 7 is then operated in order to move the series of plungers quickly into the pressing position when the main press in the end 2 is brought into use and the whole column of members is moved up against the member 3. To discharge, the column is retracted by first locking the last plate 8, carrying a closing-plate 24, to the bars 14 by throwing over a lever which causes forked sliders 28 to engage in notches 25. The pots may then be locked against movement by rotating the elliptical locking-bars 16 prior to operation of the cross-shafts 20 as before described. in order to separate the plungers from the pots to their left. On moving the press plunger to the right again, the press cakes may be expelled. The filling-valve, Fig. 8, which is adapted to open inwardly, is provided with ribs 40, shown in section in Fig. 10, which bear against a bridge-piece 41 so that the face 38 forms a continuation of the cylindrical surface of the pot. The face 38 is bored out during the boring of the cylinder. One of the ribs 40 is made double as at 44 and slides on the face of a projection 45, so that a channel is formed to allow air to escape during the feed of the cocoa into the pots.
