Recording by co-ordinates; drum apparatus; vibrations, recording.-An instrument for recording the deflections of bridges and girders under loads comprises a spring-pressed plunger b placed in contact with the girder and carrying a holder d for a pen e or pencil, which records upon a drum k driven by a spring motor. The pen or pencil holder h passes at the back through a slotted plate r to prevent rotation. For bridges where access can be had below the girder, the instrument is mounted upon a staging, a piece of plugged gas-pipe being clipped to the girder where the staging is a low one. For bridges over water, the instrument is connected to the underside of the girder, and a plugged pipe rests in the river bed. According to the Provisional Specification, the apparatus is useful in recording vibrations set up by moving loads.
