Abstract
11,141. Ogilvy, T. July 31. Boat-disengaging gear. -Relates to apparatus of the kind described in Specification 27,852/11. Instead of using a rope connection between the several locking-bars e acting as gripe-holding devices for a group of boats, link mechanism is used. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the gripes c terminate in rings d, which are slipped over rods or links e pivoted to the deck of the vessel, the free ends of these rods engaging under the arms f of bell-crank levers f, g, which, on opposite sides of the boat, are connected by links. At the sides of the vessel, the ends of the bell-cranks are connected together by links j, the end link 7c leading through a chain m to weights capable of sliding in guide-ways t. These weights are normally held in the suspended position by a chain u, one end of which engages a catch w. When the float 21 rises owing to the inrush of water through a grating 22, the weights are free to fall and overcome the action of a spring o, the pull through the links j releasing the boat gripes. As the boat rises off its chocks, the cover 26 is also released from its fastenings, the rings 28 attached to cords slipping off pins 29 as these are lifted out of engagement with a slot in a bracket 31 on the deck. Flares 32 are ignited automatically as the boats float off the sinking vessel. The bell-crank levers may be operated manually from the captain's bridge by providing additional link and lever-connexions. In a modification, crossbars extending underneath the boat are arranged so as to engage a pair of locking-rods on opposite sides of the boat, these cross-bars being actuated by one or more central longitudinal rods connected with the float-operating means. In this arrangement, the boats may be released successively from fore to aft.
