Reels and reelcarriages. - One or more coils of a material which has a tendency to unwind, such as metal box strapping, a r e mounted rotatably on a post of a stand which is provided with means engaging against the edge of the material so as frictionally to retain the coil or coils in position between the engaging-means and the side of the post and to prevent unwinding. The stand comprises a base A, an upright post B having a cap C, a spindle F on which are mounted one or more rotatable spools G, G<1> carrying the coils I, J, and clamping-bars D, E arranged to bear against the edges of the coils. In order that the stand may be adapted for coils of various widths, the bars D, E are composed of flexible material and engage at their upper ends in notches c on the cap C, and at their lower ends in notches b, b<1> on the base A, and are pressed at their centres into contact with the coils I, J by means of binding-nuts F'. A transverse rib d, running across the notches b, b<1> and engaging notches at the lower ends of the bars D, E, prevents lateral movement of the bars. The straps are drawn off the spools by pulling with sufficient force to overcome the friction and to rotate the spools. In a modified construction, the coils of material are mounted on separate uprights, which are made adjustable towards or away from each other by being provided with feet adapted to be moved between parallel grooved rails on the base A and to be clamped at any position by means of bolts and nuts. This construction is particularly intended for use when more than one strap is to be applied to a box, the uprights being spaced apart a distance equal to the distance between the points at which the straps are to be applied.
