Abstract

8547. Barber & Colman, [Barber-Colman Co.]. June 9. Yarns, warping and beaming.-In warping and beaming apparatus, a brake member 19, Fig. 8, having a polished convex braking-surface, is provided for each cheese a in the creel and is yieldingly applied by spring action to the surface of the cheese, when the machine is stopped, to prevent overrunning, while a less effective brake is simultaneously applied to the beaming-apparatus so that the tension of the yarns is maintained. The members 19 are mounted on and connected by helical springs to shafts 20, which are connected by arms 23 to rods 24, stop-arms 22 on the arms 23 normally holding the members 19 off the cheeses. All the arms 23 and rods 24 on each branch of the creel are connected by rods 27 to arms 26, Fig. 13, on a rock-shaft 25, which has an arm 29, acted upon by a spring 28, and an arm 30 carrying a pivoted dog 31 normally engaging a stop on a pivoted arm 35, which in turn engages a latch 36 having a lug 43 engaging a shoulder 42 on a bar 40. This bar is connected through a bell-crank lever 45, Fig. 1, and a rod 46 to a treadle lever 47 on a shaft S, to which is also secured a weighted lever W<1>. When a drop-wire D of the warp stop-motion falls, a latch device releases the shaft S, the weighted lever W<1> falls, and the bar 40 is moved to cause the rock-shaft 25 to be released and the brake members 19 applied to the cheeses. At the same time, the driving-belt V is moved from the fast pulley P to a loose pulley, and a brake shoe 48 is applied to the pulley P by a spring 52 acting through levers 51, 49 on a shaft 50, to which is secured a lever 53 with a pin normally pressed against the top end of a slot 54 in a rod 55 connected bv a bellcrank lever 56 and a rod 57 to a crank 58, Fig. 13, on the shaft 25. When the shaft 25 is rocked, a cam thereon acts on a belt-fork lever to shift a driving-belt from a loose pulley on to a fast pulley geared to a wheel 61, which is slowly turned until one of two stops thereon acts on the arm 30 to replace the parts in normal position and release the brakes. The belt-fork is held in operative position by a latch until this action occurs, whereupon it is released by a cam on the wheel 61, and a pivoted piece 82, controlled by an.arm 74 on the belt-fork, holds the bar 40, which has been raised by the action on a fixed piece of a cam-surface 44 on the bar, in its displaced position, so that the machine cannot be re-started by depressing the treadle T until the brakes are released. When the broken end has been pieced, the machine is first started slowly by partial depression of the treadle, and then the treadle is fully depressed to throw in the high speed. The creel may be provided with means for supporting a number of extra cheeses, the yarn from which may be substituted for the yarn from anv of the other cheeses. For each extra cheese, there is a brake 19, and the various brakes are operated by connexion with the mechanism controlling the brakes of the ordinary cheeses. A rod 87, Fig. 1, supports the extra yarns above the others, so that such extra yarns may run to any space in the comb. The cheeses are mounted in sections comprising one or more spindles 1, Fig. 1<a>, each spindle rotatably carrying, say, four crowned rollers 2, on which the cheeses are placed and which are held on the spindles by caps 5. A group of, say, three spindles is secured to a base 4, and at the winder the bases are placed with the spindles vertical to receive the cheeses. In the creel frame, the bases are supported on one end with the spindles extending longitudinally of the frame, which is of V-shaped structure, the parts being suitably braced together and each comprising a number of bays with sockets to receive the ends of the bases and the caps 5. Each bay is provided with a hinged gate 12, Figs. 1 and 8, having yarn-guiding rods 17, the lower parts of which have notches 18 to guide the yarns from the lower cheeses.
