7148. Cloud, E. A. May 12. Washing-plungers.-Valved plungers having a chamber for detergents are fitted with a buffer at the bottom. Fig. 1 shows one construction in which a ring 2 of rubber, felt, cord, canvas, bristles, &c. is fitted between the flared edge 3 of the main cone and an inner ring 4 secured in position by rivets or by soldering. Figs. 2 and 3 show modified means for securing the ring 2 to the cone. The annular soap chamber has an upper wall 9 which makes a liquid-tight joint with the main cone and with the tube 10, and a perforated lid 7 fitted with a conical extension. On the down-stroke of the plunger, the part 16 of the handle slides over the member 14 and opens the valve, thus allowing the water to rise freely in the main cone and the shield 19 and pass through the perforated lid 7 and the holes 22 into the soap chamber. On the return stroke, the valve closes, and the water in the soap chamber is drawn out through the lid 7 as the pressure within the main cone decreases. The tubes 14, 10 are perforated at 15, 18 respectively, while the shield 19 is perforated at 21 to decrease the resistance of the water to the movement of the plunger.
