WITNESSES Lw @ww ALLAN J. CLEMAN, 0F PITTSBURGH, PNNSYLVANIA.
FORGE AND 'SUCTION PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1912.
Application tiled June 22, 1911. Serial No. 634,839.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN J. Comunas, a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county oi' Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Force and Suction Pumps, of which the Jfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section ot' a pump embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the elastic cup; Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the cup attached to the pump cylinder in inverted position; Fig. 4 is a bott-om plan view of a port-ion ot' the cup; and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing a modification.
My invention has relation to force and suction pumps, and more particularly to pumps of the character' us'ed by plumbers or others for forcing or drawing obstructionsv from plumbing fixtures.
My invent-ion relates specifically to the elastic cup members which are employed with pumps of this character, and is designed to provide a cup having means for increasing its adhesion and also having means of improved character for its attachment to the pump cylinder.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 2 designates thc pump cylinder, 3 the pump piston, l the piston rod, andv 5 the operating handle.
6 designates myy improved elastic cup which is of the usual bell form, but which,
IFigsfl, 2 and 3,
instead of having the usual flat surface or single circular groove in its lower or suc tion edge is, in accordance'with my invention, provided with a plurality of adjacent concentric Ygrooves 7, which Inay Abe of the same or different depths. I have found that by employing a plurality of -these concentric grooves, theI suct-ional ad hesion of the cup is very greatly increased,
lthereby increasing largely the suction power of the pump. In accordance with. my in. vention, I" also mold4 and vulcanlze into thesmall or neck portion ofthe cup af metals:
thimble' bushing18. In the form shown in this bushing or thimble is formed with an internal screw thread to receive the internal thread of a nipple projection 9, at the lower end of the cylinder.
In the modilication shown in Fig. 5, the
thimble 8 and' nipple 9 instead of having a screw-threaded' engagement, have a tapered engagement and are also preferably* united by bayonet lock or joint 10. By molding or vulcanizing the bushing or thim-4 blc within the neck of the cup, I provide se'- cure and permanent means for attaching the cup to the pump.
The cup may, as shown in Fig. 3, be used in inverted position for application to relatively small oriices, the neck end of the cup either being applied tothe surface surrounding the orifice or extending into the orifice according to the size of the latter. The shapel of the neck portion is such as to adapt it to orifices of varying diameters. The neck end oi' the cup is preferably' provided with a plurality of concentric suction grooves 11, similar to the grooves 7, before described.
Instead of attaching the cup to a pump cylinder of the type shown, I may attach it to a hollow tube or cylinder' whose opposite end is plugged or otherwise sealed. and thereby very greatly increase the etliciency of the adhesiveand sucking action of the cup.
The advantages of myvinvention result from the v.provision of the plurality of suction grooves, above described, whereby the 4 adhesion of the cup to the surface to which it is applied is very largely'increased, and also vfrom the provision of the novel and highly edective means for attaching the cup to the pump cylinder.
I clann:
1. An elastic suction cup for pumps, having its lower edge formed with aplurality of concentric suction grooves of varying depth, substantially as described'.
2. An elastic suction cup for pumps, having the edge of its neck or smaller end formed with a lurality of concentric suction grooves, su stantially as described.
3. An elastic suction cup for pumps, said cup being reversible and having both its upper and lower edges provided with a plurality of concentric suction grooves, substantially as described.
4. A reversible elastic suction cup for pumps, having both its upper and lower edges provided with three suction grooves, the central grooves being of greater depth than the grooves adjacent thereto, substantially as described.
5. An elastic suction cu for pumps, having a metallic thimble or gushing embedded within the neck portion thereof, and having both its upper and lower facesprovided In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand. v t
ALLAN J. COLEMAN.
