Abstract

4052. Anderson, O. March 17, 1914, [Convention date]. Impulse and reaction meters. - A meter adapted for measuring motor spirit or lubricating-oil or water supplied to steam-boilers &c. comprises a rotary drum 2 having two chambers 3, 4 which alternately deliver the liquid into a graduated receiver 26 having a float 30, which controls the locking-device 24 of the drum. The liquid flows from a port 10 in a stationary hollow shaft 7 through the inlet ports 8, 9 cf the chambers 3, 4, which are fitted with outlet valves 13, 14 and also with valves permitting the outflow and inflow of air as the chambers are filled and emptied. In the position shown. the chamber 4 is being filled while the chamber 3 is discharging past the valve 13, which has been lifted by a fixed abutment 21 engaging an arm on the valve spindle. When the locking- device 24 is released, as explained below, the unbalanced weight of liquid in the chamber 4 rotates the drum 2 into the next position for delivering to the receiver 26. This release is only effected when two conditions are fulfilled. i.e. (1) when the liquid level in the receiver 26 has sunk to zero, and (2) when the chamber 4 or 3. as the case may be, is filled with liquid. The locking-device 24 is released by an electromagnet 25, which includes contacts 35, 36 in its circuit, the contacts 35 being closed by the float 30 and the links 31, 32, 33 when condition (1) is fulfilled, and the contacts 36 being closed by float-controlled pins 37. 38 when condition (2) is fulfilled. The drum 2 may operate a counting- device. and an hydrometer 29 for taking the specific gravity of the liquid may be connected . to the receiver 26. The Specification as open to inspection under Section '91 (3) (a) states also that the locking- device may be under mechanical control instead of electrical ; this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
