Abstract

3948. Luard, E. S. March 12. Pistons.-The weight of the piston c of a vacuum-brake cylinder a is counterbalanced by exposing a part of the underside of the piston to the atmosphere either permanently or during the initial movement of the piston in applying the brakes. According to the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the necessary exposed area is obtained by providing a piston-rod d of large cross-section. The piston-rod is hollow and open to the space above the piston, which is thus effectively increased. The contacting faces g of the piston and the sleeve b are faced to form a joint. As shown in Fig. 2, an annular rib l on the piston is adapted to seat at m on the cylinder base, and the area of the piston thus enclosed is open to atmosphere by way of a passage k which is, however, closed after the initial upward movement of the piston, by a spring valve j. Alternatively, the passage k may be formed in the piston-rod with its lower orifice so disposed as to be only open to atmosphere when the piston is in the lowest position.
