Abstract
3707. Hill, A. March 8. Drilling-machines of the multiple-spindle type have a special arrangement of driving-mechanism and a work-table feed interconnected with a stop-motion for the whole machine. A series of drill heads 10, Fig. 5, are adjustably mounted as shown on an I-beam 9 extending across the machine, and carry sprocket-wheels 12 arranged in staggered relation, as shown in Fig. 8, to permit close adjustment of the drill heads. The sprockets are driven by two chains 13, 16 backed up by an adjustable plate 58 and driven one from each end of the machine by the gearing shown in Fig. 1. The sprockets 15, 18 are Loose on the driving-shafts. The work table C slides on uprights 8 as controlled by cams 37 acting through levers. When the noses of the cams pass under the levers and allow them to drop, a link 43 throws out the friction clutches 31, 32. The link 43 has a lost-motion device such that the raising of the work table does not affect the clutches, the starting of the machine being effected by hand. The cam shaft is driven bv the worm and chain gearing shown, acting through a ratchet at 55 permitting hand setting by over-running.
