Abstract
3581. Lobato, J. C. March 5. Armour-clad vehicle mountings.-Relates to armoured motor-cars, and consists in constructing the body approximately elliptical in plan and curved in the longitudinal and transverse . directions. The body is divided into two parts 5<a>, 5<b>, which are composed of sheet-metal strips arranged spirally as shown and riveted together with internal straps 6<1>. The lower body part 5<b> is relatively shallow and is riveted or otherwise secured to the upper part 5<a>, the strips at the joints being reverselv curved to form horizontal flanges, which, when connected together, form a reinforced belt. Stays 6, 6<11> connect the body with the frame of the car; the staying at the front is shown in plan in Fig. 4. The front of the car is fitted with a heavy steel ram 18<1>, Fig. 4, which is sharply pointed and arranged in the line of the reinforced belt. The wheels are protected by guards 8 and are provided with solid rubber tyres which are preferably in sections. Trap-doors are fitted in the floor of the car above the axles for use in repairing the running gear. The armament consists of machine guns 16 projecting through ports 15<1>, and a heavier machine-gun 17 mounted centrally and projecting through an opening in the top of the body. Access doors at the rear and one side of the car, observation openings 14, 15 and a periscope 19 are provided.
