Abstract

2509. Jardine, J. L., and Nelson, T. A. Feb. 17. Pulp, preparation of. - A solution of acid magnesium sulphite containing a predetermined greater proportion of base than would dissolve at normal temperature (say 50-70‹ F.), and prepared by maintaining the absorption liquor at a suitable raised temperature during the absorption of sulphurous acid, is used for the extraction of cellulose from materials containing lignin and pectic substances, and it is stated that the quantity of base required varies with the quantity of pectic ingredients and the quantity of the sulphurous acid with that of the lignin. Data are given for calculating the quantity of acid that must be added to dissolve a given proportion of magnesia at a given temperature. An example is given of the treatment of bamboo arundinacea. The disintegrated culms are packed into a digester and covered with a liquor containing 2À4 per cent total sulphurous acid, 1À6 per cent being combined as normal sulphite and the rest as bisulphite. Practically no sulphurous acid escapes with the expelled air on heating, which is therefore allowed to escape freely. The digester can then be sealed, but it is better to allow a small escape of steam to assist the circulation of the liquor. The full pressure of 85-90 lb. per sq. in. above atmospheric pressure is attained in 2-3 hours, and the cooking is finished in 8-9 hours, the end being determined by analysis, as described in Specification 18,371/13.
