2150. Humphrys, R. A. Feb. 10. Decorticating sisal &c. -- Sisal or other fibrous material is fed by toothed chains 13, Fig. 1, projecting through a table 14 to a feed chain or rope 22 running under grooved pulleys 25, 26 and over suitable guide-pulleys. The ends of the materials &c. are pressed against an adjustable board 17 at the side of the feedtable by rollers 18 projecting through slots in the table 14. The material is passed by the chain &c. 22 between two pairs of coacting bladed drums 21, which are rotated in opposite directions. Between the two pulleys 25, 26, the material is drawn through slightly to expose the untreated portion of the material by an inclined gripping-band &c. 32 and pulley 30. Water is supplied to the drums by nozzles 27. The decorticated material is transferred to travelling bands 34, 35 and carried through a wringing-apparatus 40 comprising rollers 36, 37 Fig. 6, with tapered ends on endless chains 38. The rollers are pressed by spring- controlled guides 41 against a central board 47. The material hanging over the rope 35 is then blown out into an horizontal position by a jet of air issuing from a flat nozzle 45, Fig. 9, into position to be gripped between pairs of perforated travelling bands 44, which carry it through a drying-chamber 43. The fan which delivers the hot air to the chamber 43 is preferably situated between the air-heater and the chamber. Water may be led through hollow shafts to the interiors of the drums 21 and supplied to the material during treatment through perforations in the drums.
