[Also in Division F4] Apparatus for treating knitted fabric webs comprising a preparatory zone, a steaming zone and a hot-air treating zone positioned one after another and each fitted with conveyor means for. conveying the web successively through said zones, is characterised by the provision of overfeed means from the first to the second conveyor and from the second to the third conveyor, and mechanical beating means for beating the second and third conveyors for keeping the web in oscillation in a substantially perpendicular direction to the plane of said conveyors. Web 17 is taken from stack 17a and is fed on a pervious conveyor belt 16 on rolls 14, 15 through a preparatory zone 11 and thence on to a second pervious conveyor belt 18 on rolls 19, 20, 21. Belt 18 conveys the web 17 first through a steaming chamber 23 where a number of steam jets are directed towards the upper and the lower surfaces by nozzles 31, 32 fed from supply pipe 33, the steam being exhausted through duct 35 by discharge blower 36. As the web 17 leaves chamber 23 it is subjected to a beating action from beneath the belt 18 by means of a beater 42 which can be mechanically or electromagnetically operated. The belt 18 then carries the web into a hot-air processing chamber 22, mainly for drying purposes, where the web is discharged on to a third pervious conveyor belt 58 which is also subjected to a beating action by a beater 65 which may also be mechanically or electromagnetically operated: Hot-air is circulated in chamber 22 by a fan 70 having a heating element therein and driven by motor 69. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown) the hot air may be directed on to the web through a large number of perforations in a pair of opposing walls on opposite sides of the web path. The conveyors are driven by suitable belt drives from an electric motor 24 through a stepless variable speed gear 25, the pulley sizes being arranged to give the required overfeed from the first to the second conveyor and from the second to the third conveyor. Alternatively the pulleys may be coned so that the overfeeding can be adjustable. The speed ratio between the first and second conveyors may be from 1:0.95 to 1:0.5 and that between the second and third conveyors from 1:0.95 to 1:0.8; and the periodicity of the beater may be from 50 to 5000 per min. at an amplitude of from 1 to 10 mm.
