Beit known that I, JAMES M. McCAUsLnND, of Pepperell, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Coating Paper, of which the followg ing is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled 1n the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the saine, reference being,"

The cylinders B C are preferably about live feet in diameter and are journaled bv means of transversely-arranged shafts :n Qc inthe frame A, about twelve feet distant 'from each other, said shafts being` provided with pulleys b, connected by a crossed belt, d. Diagonally and vlongitudinally arranged coils of steam-pipes r', provided with valves fw, arc secured to the frame A by means of brackets y, said pipes being connected with any suitable steam-supply. These coils are disposed in an inclined plane which impinges the upper surface of one cylinder and the lower surface of the other and constitute an inclin ed passage between them, through which the paper passes from one cylinder to the other.
Guide-rolls 2 are journaled in a convenient position above the frame A, and are each provided with a pulley, 55, said pulleys being connectedby a belt, 65.
In the use of my improvement the roll of paper, 75, is journaled on a mandrel mounted in the frame A, and the tanks p filled with the coating; material. Power being` applied to the machine, the cylinder C is caused to rotate from right to left and the cylinder B from left to right, the guide-rolls 2 and circular brushes m r at the same time being rc volved. The paper D is fed from the roll 7 5 over the right-hand guide-roll t, between it land the adjacent coating-brush r, which, be-
ing,` in Contact with the feed-roll q in the trough p, receives the coating material from said roll and deposits it upon the outer surface of the paper as it passes. The paper is then passed over the cylinder C and under the brushes k m, which spread the coating evenly upon the surface and impart the required finish thereto in the usual manner. Between the cylinders C and B the paper passes between the coils of steam-pipe fr,

whereby the coating is rapidly dried sufficiently to allow its coated surface to be brought in contact with the cylinder B without injury, the papcrbeing passed under said cylinder and carried upward over the guidcroll f, where its opposite surface is coated in substantially the same manner by the revolving brush fr, adjacent to said roll, said coating being finished, as before, by passing the paper over the cylinder B and under similar distributing-brushes 7; m. After leaving the cylinder B the paper is led over the guide-rolls z and into the ordinary drying apparatus. (Not shown.)
It will readily be seen that by passing the paper from the roll 7 5 directly over the cylinder B the apparatus may be employed for coating' paper on one side only, as is sometimes desirable.
I do not confine myself to the system of belting 'shown for driving the cylinders, rolls, dac., as they may be driven in any suitable nia-n'- ner.A Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is I. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, two cylinders journaled in said frame, two coils of steampipe disposed between said cylinders in an inclined plane, impinging the top surface of one cylinder and the bottom surface of the other cylinder, said coils forming a straight passage between. them through which thc paper passes to be dried, troughs for containin g the coating material, provided with a feedroll and secured, respectively, at each end of on opposite surfaces as it passes over said rolls g and cylinders, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine of the character described,
the combination of a frame, two cylinders journaled in said frame and revolving in opposite directions, a trough for containing the coating material, provided with a feed-roll and secured at each end of said frame, a revolving coating-brush journaled in each end of said :frame in contact with said feed-rolls, gi1ide-rolls for the paper journaled, respectively, in said frame nearly in contact with said coating-brushes, a series of laterally-arranged straight brushes and a revolving brush for distributing the coating as the paper passes oversaid cylinders, and diagonallyarranged coils of steam-pipe for drying the coated surface of the paper as it leaves one cylinder, whereby it is adapted to be brought in contact with the second cylinder to permit the opposite surface to be coated, substantially as specified.

In a machine of the characterdescribed, the combination of the frame A, the revolving' cylinders B C, journaled in said frame, brushes for depositing the coating material upon opposite surfaces of the paper as it respectively passes over said cylinders, and the steam-coils t, secured between said cylinders for drying the paper as it leaves the cylinder C, and thereby preventing it from adhering to the cylinder B, substantially as set forth.
4. In a machine of the character described, the combination of the frame A, the cylinders l C, journaled in said frame, the troughs p, secured to said frame and provided with feedrolls q, the revolving coating-brushes yr, journaled in said frame, the guide-rolls the iinsaid frame, a coat1ng-brush journaled in said i ishing-brushes k mf, supported above said cyl- 1 inders, and the steam-pipes li', adapted to dry the paper as it passes between the cylinders, substantially as specified.
