Abstract

1849. Draper, J. M. Feb. 5. Upward-current classifiers.-Material comprising substances of different specific gravities to be separated is fed through a compartment 2 into a vertical tube 1, supplied with an upward current of water from a pipe 6 and provided with an adjustable overflow 4 for water and light material. A second water inlet 7 is provided below the pipe 6, connected to an open tank 8, in which water is maintained at the same level as the overflow 4. The heavy material falls to an outlet 10, which may be fitted with a diminishing nozzle or may discharge into a closed chamber 12 provided with an elevator 13 working in a tube 13<a>, in which water is maintained at the same level as in the chamber 1 and tank 8. A perforated member 15 is preferably provided in the tube 1. Additional outlets from the tube 1 may be provided for the removal of intermediate products.
