Abstract

1578. Wood, W. G. Feb. 1. Springs, arrangement of and mounting undercarriages on; guiding vertical play.-A pneumatic support for vehicle bodies comprises a bar and a ring, one being connected to the body and the other supported by the axle, an annular pneumatic tube surrounding the bar within the ring, and plates secured to the bar on each side of the ring and in sliding contact therewith. The device is described in combination with plate springs and helical bearing and recoil springs, and means for regulating the pressure in each tube is provided. Figs. 2 and 4 show the device applied to the rear axle of an auto-- mobile, in which brackets 6 on the axle carry a bar 8, on the ends of which the pneumatic tubes 12 are mounted. A ring 13 surrounds the tube and is connected at its lowest point to a plate spring 14. The bracket 6 is enlarged into a plate 7, which, with a plate 17, forms a sliding fit against the ring 13. A cylindrical part 18 is formed on the plate 7, enclosing the ring but cut away at its lower part. Brackets 19 having slotted vertical portions 20 extend laterally from the ring 13 and engage the ends of brackets 21 on the chassis. Guide-pins 22, around which springs 23 are coiled, are passed through the brackets 21 and secured in the extensions 20. When the spring 14 is flattened and the brackets 21 reach their lowest positions in the slots, the tubes 12 act as pneumatic stops. At the front axle, the cylindrical part 18 is complete, and the longitudinal plate springs are secured to a transverse bar connected to the lowest points of the rings 13 on the opposite sides of the vehicle. The rear tubes 12 may be mounted in advance of the rear axle upon a supplementary frame supported on the axles. Tubes 24 lead from each tube 12 to a gauge on the dash-board, and separately-controlled connexions to an air reservoir are provided. The reservoir may be maintained under a constant pressure by an automatically-controlled pump driven from the engine.
