Abstract

Projectile fuses. -Relates to direct-action percussion fuses, and consists in releasing the locking- device of the firing-pin, which projects in front of the projectile, by the direct action of the pressure of the gases in the gun from which the projectile is discharged. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the firing-pin 4, provided with a head 40 and connected to the projectile by a spring 5, is locked by a distance - piece 9. until this is released, when the gun is fired, by the withdrawal of a pin 8, which is thrust forwards by another pin 7 attached to a piston 13 in a base-piece 12, 14 open to the pressure of the gun gases; the piston is normally held back by a spring 15. In a modification, the firing-pin screws into screw-threads at the front end of the socket 3 in the nose of the projectile, the spring 5 tends to screw the firing-pin into the socket and disengage the screw-threads to arm the fuse, and such rotation of the firing-pin is prevented by the pin 8 passing through a hole in a cross-pin secured to the firing-pin, Projectiles.-The projectile has a four-winged tail 2.
