Abstract

489. Arnold, W. R. Jan. 12, 1914, [Convention date]. Rail joints; rails.-A rail joint is formed by a sleeve made in two parts encircling the web and flange of the rail, the ends of the rails being slipped in longitudinally when the parts are in engagement. The two parts 1, 2 have their lower portions 3, 9 cut away so as to form interlocking-dovetails 7, 10. Bolt-holes 8, 11 are formed through the upper and lower portions embracing the rail flange, the rail flange itself being recessed at corresponding positions to prevent both lateral and longitudinal movement when the securing-spikes are in place. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 196/04 and 27,189/05.
