24,749. Dodds, E. I. Dec. 29. Stays.-Flexible stay-bolts for boilers are made with one or more helical slots the bases of which are sufficiently thin to rupture under stresses. Fig. 8 shows a stay with two slots, and Fig. 15 a stay with one slot, while Figs. 6, 10, 11 show various arrangements of slots. In making a stay, a blank is first slotted longitudinally and then hammered &c. to close the slots and reduce the diameter of the blank at the centre. The shank or centre is then twisted 'to make the slots helical, and the heads threaded. Instead of continuous. slots, short slots arranged in step-like form, as shown in Fig. 14, may be employed.
