Abstract
24,630. Jones, W., and Jones & Attwood. Dec. 24. Fluids, regulating volume of flow of; combinations of interdependent valves; actuating. -The contents of tanks for purifying sewage, particularly by the method of aerating in presence of bacterial sludge, are discharged by continuously withdrawing the upper layers. The liquid from a tank 1 is discharged through a pipe 2 surmounted by a series of valve rings 3 seated one upon the other and connected by studded pins 4 passing through bosses 5. The rings 3 are lifted in succession by a bucket 10, which is filled slowly by a tap 14 from a cistern 13, which receives liquid through a tap 15. The bucket 10 is emptied by a valve 17 contacting with a stop 18, and the weight of the rings returns them to the closed position. The lowermost ring which retains the sludge in the tank is not raised by the bucket 10. In place of the rings 3, straight sliding bars or slats forming a weir in the sides of the tank may be used. The bucket 10 may hang in the tank 1. A floating siphon tube 26, Fig. 5, supported by an annular float 25, and which comes into action when a discharge valve in the tube 2 is opened, may be used. The valve is actuated by a device consisting of a bucket receiving liquid from the tank 1 through a regulated tap and connected by a cord passing over pulleys to a float in the tank. The cord carries projections which contact with projections on a shaft to operate compressed air valves to admit air to devices for opening or closing the sewage-supply valve, the air-supply valve for aeration of the sewage, and the sewage-discharge valve in sequence. The float 25 may be arranged to support the ends 30 of the siphon tubes out of the liquid when empty and be supplied with liquid from a regulated tap, to immerse the ends 30. The liquid is discharged from the float through valves opened when the float contacts with stops on the bottom of the tanks.
