Abstract

13,062. Mather & Platt, and Whyte, L. June 6. Actuating valves; liquids, regulating flow of.- Relates to means for automatically operating controlling-valves by means of which a group of tanks can be repeatedly discharged, the height of the liquid in one tank controlling the action of the controlling and discharge valves of a neighbouring tank. The invention may be applied to the type of valve described in Specification No. 2420, A.D. 1900, [Abridgment Class Closets &c.], and is applicable where apparatus described in Specification No. 12,287, A.D. 1901, would not be suitable. In an arrangement, shown in Fig. 1, for two tanks, one tank (not shown) is assumed to be filling, while the tank B is full and awaiting discharge. The first tank is connected by pipes P with float chambers C<1>, C' each containing a float F<1>, F<2>, respectively, operating two valves V<1>, V<2> arranged in separate compartments D', D<2>. As the tank fills, the liquid rises first in the float chamber C<1> and next in the chamber C<2>, thereby operating consecutively the floats F<1>, F<2> and operating the valves V<1>, V<2>. When the valve V<1> opens, fluid from the full tank B passes through the pipes P<1>, P<2>, and through the flexible tube P<3> into a chamber K which is thereby caused to overbalance the weighted lever supporting it and to open the valve in the discharge pipe W. When the valve V<2> is operated, the liquid in the chamber K is drained away and the discharge valve is allowed to close. The floats and valve return to their initial positions as the liquid empties from the chambers C<1>, C' consequent on the emptying of the tank A. In a modification, the floats operate the valves V<1>, V<2> placed on one spindle through one lever only, the lower float after its first movement becoming submerged. The lower valve V<2> is loose on the valve spindle between two stops so as to be operated some time after the valve V<1>. In a further modification, the two floats F<1>, F' are arranged in a single float chamber, the upper float being supported by a stop on the side of the chamber until the liquid rises to a sufficient height to float it.
