Abstract
22,900. Bell, T. A. Nov. 23. Vibration - dampers. -- A vibration-damper, which permits the axle of a motor or other vehicle to recede freely from the chassis but resists its approach, consists of a brake segment 14 moved within a drum 21 fixed to the chassis, one end of the segment being pivoted to a crank 9 on a shaft 8 connected by a lever and link to the axle so that, on account of the toggle action of the crank 9, the segment moves freely when the crank rises and frictionally engages the drum when the crank moves downwards. The brake segment is covered with a lining 18, which may be of canvas with wire threads or mesh embedded in it. The forward end 15 of the web of the brake segment acts as a stop and has a series of holes 12 to permit adjustment of the connexion with the crank 9. A spring 20 arranged between the crank 9 and the brake segment, and which may bear against an adjustable screw abutment in the crank, presses the segment on to the drum throughout the braking stroke.
