Abstract

Thermometers.-Consists in an appliance for sampling and ascertaining the temperature of grain and like material stored in bulk, comprising a sectional tubular drill having a lateral aperture near the end closed by a sliding sleeve, and a weighted bucket which, when lowered down the drill, opens the lateral aperture and receives a sample of grain. The lower part of the drill is of copper or other material of high conductivity, and is perforated so that the temperature of the surrounding mass is rapidly communicated to a registering- thermometer lowered down the drill. The drill is driven into the grain &c. by helices, one on the point 4, Fig. 3, and others at intervals on the body of the drill. It is rotated by a winch or hand-tool applied to polygonal sleeves secured at intervals. The sections of the drill interlock at the joints, having tongues and recesses 21, Fig. 8, and are held in place by sleeves 15 secured to the lower section and attached by set-screws 22 to the upper section. The sleeves 15 may be polygonal and form the means for rotating the drill. The driving-device may consist of an eye 17, Fig. 9, which fits the polygonal sleeves and is secured by a spring bolt 20, provided with a number of radial sockets 18, in any of which a handle 19 can be inserted. Or a winch may be used, comprising a frame 31, Fig. 11, which folds into a box 32 and carries a hand-driven shaft 30 connected directly or through bevel-gearing to a flexible shaft 35, which is geared to a wheel 39 carrying a socket to fit the polygonal sleeve, movement of the bracket 37 being prevented by a handle 40. According to the Provisional Specification, the sleeves connecting the drill sections are secured by tangential taper pins.
