Abstract

21,270. Wertheim, M. Oct. 2C. Boat-launching gear; stowing boats. - Boats are suspended from launching-rails pivotally connected to the side of the ship in such a manner that, when outwardly extended, the boats can be moved along the rails away from the ship before being lowered by the ordinary davit tackle, and when inboard, the rails together with the boats are turned up into a vertical position. A power-driven shaft mounted along the side of the ship carries a number of launching-rails i, Fig. 2. Each boat c is suspended from a pair of rails i by ropes o, one end of each of which goes to a wheel p adapted to run on guides q beneath the rails, and also by ropes attached to ordinary counterweighted tacklereleasing hooks r, r<1>, r<2> and suspended by straps s, Fig. 6, from a wheel t running on the rails. The wheel t is attached by straps s' to the pulley v of the davit hoisting-tackle. In the inboard position, the boat is retained on its side by hooks k. To launch the boat, the hoisting-tackle x of the davit w is used. The first part of the pull raises the boat so that the hooks k are cleared ; then the rails i are moved outboard, and with further pulling on the tackle x, the boat moves outward and its suspension wheels t move along the rails until the rails are clear, whereupon the boat hangs ready for lowering. The boats may be more rigidly secured to the ship by a bolt adapted to slide under the fender l.
