Abstract
19,982. McCool, E. F. Sept. 19. Ball-and-ring mills; conical mills; crushers with gyratory heads; disk and like mills; driving-gear.-One grinding-member is adapted to receive a. combined rotary and orbital movement by mounting it upon a rotary shaft eccentrically disposed within a rotating sleeve. The co-operating grinding-member may be fixed or rotary. According to the form shown in Fig. 1, the sleeve 6 is driven by a pulley 8, and the shaft 35, eccentrically disposed within it and carrying the grinding-member 40, is driven by a gear 34 on the shaft 35 engaged by a gear 32 mounted upon a crank 30 rigid with the sleeve 6. The gear 32 engages a fixed toothed ring 33. The grinding-member 41 is detachably secured upon the shaft 35 by lugs 39, Figs. 1 and 4, on this member adapted to pass through a rectangular opening 38 in the face of a hollow member 37 slidably mounted on the shaft; by giving the grinding-member a quarter-turn, the lugs 39 can be engaged between rearwardly projecting lugs 45 on the inner face part of the member 37. The extremity 43 of the shaft 35 is rounded to seat into a cavity in the grinding - member, which is thus permitted a slight rocking movement on the shaft. The shaft is adapted to slide rearwardly against suitable resilient means whereby the grinding-members may separate, for example in case an obstacle is admitted between them. Such rearward movement may operate connexions to disengage the power pulley 8. The grinding-member 52 is fixed to a hinged housing 53 having a feed-hopper 57. The ground material is expelled by an outlet from the housing by an air current created by fan blades 60 on the shaft 35, the air intake being by adjustable holes 64. In the forms shown in Figs. 5 and 6, grinding is effected by balls 208, 209 in addition to the toothed surfaces 210, 211. In Fig. 5, the fan blades 175 are shown carried by a separate rotary sleeve 162 journaled in the fixed sleeve 163 and having within it the rotary sleeve 188 surrounding the eccentric shaft 187 of the lower grinding- member 179. The sleeves 162, 188 are driven from the countershaft 168 by gears 166, 167 and 189, 190 and the shaft 187 by a star-wheel 193 thereon engaged by projections 194 on a gear-wheel 195 loose on the sleeve 188 and driven by a gear-wheel 198. The shaft 187 is supported upon a lever 236 connected to a rod 199 acted upon by a spring 205, the tension of which can be adjusted by a hand-wheel 204 to regulate the. fineness of the grinding. The upper grinding-member is fixed by the bolts 182. Ingress of air to the fan chamber 156 is by way of holes 220. In the form shown in Fig. 6 the upper grinding-member 178 rotates, being connected by bolts 266 to a spider 263, which is rigid with the sleeve 188 and which also carries the fan blades 175. The member 178 is able to yield upwardly against springs 267 threaded on the bolts 266. The sleeve 188 mounted in roller bearings 275 is driven by gears 271, 272, and the shaft 187 by a gear 273 eccentrically mounted upon the countershaft 168 to gear with the wheel 274 on the shaft 187.
