Abstract
16,986. Parsons, Sir C. A. July 17. Armatures and field magnets, cooling.-Water or other liquid is introduced by a stationary pipe k, Fig. 1, into an axial duct b formed in the rotor, and, after traversing the duct b, the liquid flows through radial holes h into a series of pipes f embedded in the rotor body ; the liquid returns through the pipes f towards the inlet end of the rotor, then flows radially inwards and out to an exhaust chamber o through the space between the pipe k and the bore of the rotor spindle. The parts at which leakage or splashing of the liquid can take place are removed as far as possible from the conducting-parts of the rotor. The ends of the pipes f and the radial holes h may be stopped by screwed plugs j. The pipes f, Fig. 3, may be secured to the rotor body by soldering and by the use of strips g of copper &c. fixed at the bottom of the winding slots by caulking. The pipe k carries sharp-edged disks m or other packing. In a modified construction, the fixed pipe k is shortened and fits with packing inside a wider pipe projecting into the rotor duct b. The invention may be applied to laminated rotors.
