[Addition to 1552/14.] Self-sustaining gear. - The self - sustaining gear described in the parent Specification is modified by providing both circumferential and plane friction surfaces on the ratchet-wheel, brake blocks being forced into engagement with both surfaces by the axial pressure set up by the screw. The ratchet-wheel d is supported solely by a flange d<2> resting on the hub c<1> of the hand-wheel c as described in the parent Specification. The screwed hub of the wheel engages a threaded part of the load shaft a, to which is secured a disk b with wedge-shaped projections g. Loose segmental blocks f with bevelled edges adjacent to the projections g are arranged within a second flange d' on the ratchet-wheel d. The axial pressure set up by the screw causes the web of the ratchet-wheel d to be held between the hub c<1> and the blocks f, and at the same time the blocks f are forced outwards into frictional engagement with the inner surface of the flange d<1>.
