Abstract

15,879. August, J. R. C., and Henderson, J. E. July 2. Packeting by wrapping-up.-Small articles, such as pieces of toffee, are wrapped, and the ends of the wrapper twisted, by passing the article and paper between endless travelling belts. Each article 3, Fig. 1, is pushed by a plunger 35 from the bottom of a shoot 34 into a sheet of paper 4 fed vertically through guides 37. The motion of the plunger cuts the paper web through parts 51, 54. The article and paper pass between the closely-superposed elastic belts 1, the upper of which is at first stationary. The swelling produced in the lower belt closes an electrical contact 7, 8, which, through solenoids 11, Fig. 2, causes the jaws 12, 15 at each side to grip the ends of the wrapper, while the upper belt then moves oppositely to the lower and so twists the ends. The upper belt is put into gear through the action of an electromagnet 17 with an interrupted commutator, which shortly stops the upper belt while the lower belt acts to discharge the article. According to the Provisional Specification, the ends of the wrapper may be held, during twisting. between the edges of polygonal wheels operated by mechanical gearing. The articles are fed from a hopper 27, Fig. 5, arranged over a travelling belt 22 with compartments. A wheel 31 with arms 32 throws back articles not lying wholly in the compartments, and the remainder are kept in place by a curved guide 33 until they arrive over the shoot 34. Several of the machines may be grouped together, in which case the hoppers 27 are supplied from a conveyer belt 59, Fig. 7, immediately over which are arranged deflecting-boards 60 of increasing length so as to divert uniform charges.
