3,170,274 r APPING MAQIHINE Franklin B. Roberts, Springfield, and Walter Luczclr, Inl dian Orchard, Mass, assignors to Package Machinery Company, East Longmeadow, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts 1 Filed Nov.13, 1961-, SenNo. 151,910 44'Claims. (Cl. 53-226) The present invention relates toimprovements in wrapping. machines ofthe type norm-ally employed in wrapping bread, it being understood, of course, that such machines may also be employed in wrapping other articles.
The general object of ,thelinvention is to increase the rate at which bread and similar articles may be wrapped.
Another objectis to minimize the maintenance and service requirements for such machines.
A more specific object is to provide for improved control of the wrapper material as it is advanced to and around the articles to be wrapped and at the same time tofacilitate the introduction of a new web of wrapping material intothe machine in a minimum of time.
Another specific object is to provide improved means for obtaining registration of printed matter on the wrapper material relative to the articles being Wrapped.
A further object of the invention is to minimize the number of adjustments required when changing over to wrap a different size of article, and in this regard-particularly to improve the adjustment of conveyor means for advancing articles such as sliced loaves of bread to the In one aspect of the invention, the features of novelty are characterized by a wrapping machine in which linkage means are provided for moving an elevator between positions respectively aligned with infced and discharge platforms. Preferably the elevator is horizontally disposed and moved along a rectilinear path.
Other aspects are characterized by the provision of means for severing a web after it has beenpartially encircled therein by raising an elevator from an infeed platform to a discharge platform. Gripper means movable with the elevator clamp the web and position it for wrapping the next article as the elevator moves baclc to the infeed' platform. The web is thereby drawn from a: web supply system during both strokes of the elevator. Where printed panels on the web are to be registered on the articles, release of the web from the gripper means is controlled by an clectric eye mechanism.
The web supply system is characterized by means for providing a substantial length of the web under minimum tension which is readily available and facilitates its being fed during both movements of the elevator, viz as the elevator moves from the infeed platform to the discharge platform and then back again. The web supply system is also characterized by the ready manner in which various elements may be displaced tointroduce a new web therethrough. The web supply system is further characterized by the provision of means for maintaining practically the entire length of web therein taut when the supply roll therefor has been exhausted thereby minimi zingrthe inconvenience ofstarting a fresh supply roll.
The cross feed conveyor for delivering articles to the machine is characterized by the ease of its adjustment to accommodate articles of different lengths. This ad? justment' is made through the same means that are also employed to drive the conveyor.
The above and other relat'edobjects and features of the invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description of the disclosure found in the accompanying drawings and the novelty thereof pointed out in the appended claims.
