Furnace details. - A movable electrode for a smelting - furnace comsists of one or more longitudinal carbon rods enveloped by a refractory basic slag-producing compound of magnesium becoming conductive when heated. The total cross-sectional area is large in comparison with the area of carbon. In the form shown in end view, rods 2 of carbon or artificial graphite are embedded in a baked mixture of magnesia or dolomite and a binder such as hot tar or sodium silicate within a sheet-iron or other tube 1. In use, the working ends of the rods, if of carbon, become converted into graphite, so that carburizing of the molten metal is minimized.
