Abstract

15,197. Steiner, A. Oct. 18, 1913, [Convention date]. Relay actions.-In mechanical relay actions in which a key-controlled operating-device is provided for each type-lever or other type-member, each of the operating-devices is driven by a separate source of power, such as a spring, the arrangement permitting independent adjustment of the type-levers for impression. In the action shown, each operating-lever c for the type-levers a is connected to a spring q and is provided with a cam n adapted to engage a constantly rotating roller k common to all the cams, the lever being normally held down, with the spring in tension and the cam clear of the roller, by a key-lever d. The roller may be coated with rubber. The cam is pivoted at o between cheeks on the lever, and is recessed at n<1> so as to cause the cam to tend to overbalance in the direction shown, overbalancing being prevented by the engagement of a pin p<1> on the cam with a finger p. On striking the key-lever, the lever c is released and is lifted by the spring, the cam being released from the finger p and brought into engagement with the roller k. The cam is then rotated in the direction of the arrow and the spring lifts the lever c and causes the type-lever to swing upwards for impression. In the further rotation of the cam, the lever c is turned downwards until it is caught by the key-lever, this being lifted by a spring i. The spring q is thus tensioned and the type-lever withdrawn. The springs q are individually adjustable to adjust the type-members for impression, by means of screws r mounted in a bar s. Adjustment may also be effected by altering the shapes of the cams and the roller. For manifolding, the springs can be adjusted simultaneously by raising or lowering the bar s, this being preferably mounted in rotatable end-disks t which can be locked in adjusted position by a spring-pin entering holes t<3>. The bar may be associated with a scale showing the number of copies to be printed. In a modification, the roller k is arranged under the levers c and these are formed in two pivoted parts connected by the driving-springs.
