Systems depending on the use of two or more machines.-In order to obtain a flexible voltage at both the generating and receiving ends of an electric transmission system, the power factor of the system at the receiving end is controlled by a synchronous condenser, motor, or generator, the voltage drop in transmission being compensated for, independently of the control of the power factor, by a series synchronous booster 7 driven from the synchronous machine 8. The voltage of the bus-bars 15 at the generating station is regulated in accordance with the requirements of the local feeders 20 by means of a Tirrell regulator 3. The voltage of the bus-bars 9 at one receiving station is regulated by controlling the excitation of the machine 8 by means of a Tirrell regulator 13, a rheostat 11 being provided for controlling the excitation of the booster 7.
