Abstract

14,218. Cloud, J. W. June 12. Fluid-pressure.-In fluid-pressure brake systems wherein, at the application of the brakes, there is permitted an initial rapid flow of air to the brake cylinders for the purpose of quickly taking up slack in the mechanism, and a restricted flow subsequently, a valve is interposed in the triple valve in the passage connecting the auxiliary reservoir with the brake cylinder, such valve being set by hand so as to predetermine the rate of flow of air in the second and restricted stage referred to above, according to the length of the train or other circumstance. Fig. 1 shows a construction applied to a triple valve having a valve 3, which is kept open by the spring 4<1> to permit the initial rapid flow of air to the brake cylinder by way of the passages 6, 5, 7, and is closcd automatically when the pressure in the brake cylinder acting on the abutment 4 becomes such as to overcome the spring. Subsequent flow of air then takes place only through a plug cock 9, which can be set by hand so that one or other of its two or more passages of different cross-section 16, 17 is open as desired.
