Abstract

12,630. Tew, J. D. May 22. Machines for making.- Apparatus for manufacturing hollow cords such as are described in Specification 12,629/14 comprises a strand-tensioning device 16, 19, Fig. 1, a casing 22 in which the strands are twisted, coated, and impregnated with liquid or semi-liquid cement such as rubber solution, and a frame 73 for twisting and receiving the cord. The strands 14 pass from bobbins or spools 12 twice around a grooved roller 16 and once arcund a plain roller 19, whereby all the strands are given an equal tension, and thence downwards through dies 20, Fig. 3, removably secured in tapered holes in a disk 28, which is screwe i at 27 to the sleeve 26 of the casing 22. A substantially cylindrical membar 34 secured to the disk 28 is provided with grooves 37 which allow the strands to converge upon a conical former 24, about which the strands are twisted to form the hollow cord. The casing is closed by a die-holder 41 which has a conical surface 46 and supports a tubular die 25, into which the former 24 extends, by means of a nut 64, a removable washer allowing longitudinal adjustment of the die. The die can be moved downwards away from the former 24 by screwing the nut 64 against a flange 67 on the die. The rubber solution &c. is supplied to the channels 37, preferably under pressure, from a pipe 55 through passages 53, 54, the pipe 55 being connected to a T-piece 56 supporting the upper end of the casing. The cord is drawn through the die 25 by means of a pulley 80 driven, as the frame 73 rotates, from a stationary worm 70, and, passing twice around this pulley 80 and once around a pulley 81, is wound upon a bobbin 88. The bobbin 88 is removably supported on a fork 90 and engages a pivot 89 held by a thumb screw. The bobbin shaft 91 is driven through friction-clutch gearing 93, 95, 96, and the frame 73 through gearing 75, 76.
