Pneumatic separating.-In apparatus of the kind in which undulatory motion is imparted to a defined quantity of air enclosed in the apparatus, whereby the stock is subjected to the action of blasts or waves of air, in order to vary the strength of the air current in successive horizontal layers, a vertical conical fan, or a cylindrical fan working in a conical casing, is employed. In the form shown, the vertical conical fan, having blades 4 of different length, works in a closed casing 1 and is surrounded by a series of conical baffle-rings 5 and a sieve 6. The feed, regulated by a sleeve 9, is distributed by the end plate 10 of the fan and falls over the baffle - rings. The heavy particles escape bv the openings 12, and the finer material by the openings 13. The ring 14 serves to make an air-tight joint. The sieves or the baffle-rings may be dispensed with.
